The Mustangs never gave up the lead versus New Mexico Highlands University on Tuesday night in Silver City. WNMU got the easy win, 101-67. The Mustangs remain in the hunt for an RMAC playoff spot with a 14-10 record overall and 10-6 in the RMAC. Highlands is now 1-23 and 1-15 in conference.
Half way through the first half, WNMU began to run away with the game after junior Steve Berrelleza (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) (Phoenix, AZ) nailed four-straight three-pointers. In a three-minute stretch, the Mustangs went on a 14-4 run.
WNMU led at halftime, 50-22.
Things continued to go well in the second half for WNMU. The Mustangs hit 19-of-32 shots while limiting the Cowboys to only 44.4% from the field.
Overall, WNMU got 24 points off of 15 NMHU turnovers. The Mustangs were also able to dominate in the paint, finishing with 38 points from close range. The Cowboys only had 22.
Leading the way for the Mustangs was senior Trey Clarkson (Tucson, AZ/Sal Pointe High School) (Tucson, AZ) with 20 points. He was followed by Casey Crevelone (Tucson, AZ/CDO High School) (Tucson, AZ) and Berrelleza, each who had 18 points. Clarkson, Crevelone, and Berrelleza combined for 13 of the team's 16 three-pointers.
NMHU's Stephen Shanks led all scorers with 21 points.
